Artist Statement

“My paintings begin with words written onto canvas as though each canvas is a new page in an ongoing story. From the obscurity of scrawled writing or sentence fragments flow shapes, lines, textures and colors that attempt to translate the hidden meanings and feelings associated with words. The words and painting have a relationship not just to each other but to the eye, and the “I.” There are continual themes of the desire to communicate what words alone cannot describe, expressed by a complex layering of materials. Occasionally I use mathematical formulas for their symbolic logic, solutions and order in disorder, yet my work ultimately assumes the language of the heart, not the mind.” -Karen Laborde
